Connecting Ireland and Chile Through Astronomy at DCU
October 6th, 2026 english
The Embassy of Chile in Ireland recently co-hosted “Astronomy from the Andes” with Dublin City University’s Centre for Astrophysics and Relativity (CfAR), bringing together science, international collaboration and some of the most exciting developments in modern astronomy.
The public lecture, presented by Professor Tom Ray, explored the groundbreaking discoveries being made by telescopes located in Chile’s deserts and highlighted the country’s important role in international astronomical research. The event also marked the culmination of an academic conference connecting scientists from DCU and the Universidad de Valparaíso.
Exploring the Universe from the Atacama Desert
Chile’s Atacama Desert is home to some of the world’s most advanced astronomical facilities. Its high altitude, dry climate and exceptionally clear skies make it an important location for observing and studying the universe.
One of the major developments highlighted was the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Once operational, the ELT is expected to become the world’s largest optical and infrared telescope.
Connecting Ireland and Chile through Research
Astronomy from the Andes also provided an opportunity to celebrate the academic links between Dublin City University and the Universidad de Valparaíso, bringing researchers together through shared interests in astrophysics and astronomy.
Events such as this demonstrate the value of international academic collaboration and provide an opportunity for the wider public to engage with research that is helping us better understand our universe.
DCU International Academy was delighted to see this international collaboration and cultural exchange taking place at Dublin City University.
