Learning, Teaching and Assessment Framework

DCU International Academy (DCU IA) is committed to providing a structured, engaging and student-centred approach to English language teaching, learning and assessment.

Our aim is to support students in developing the ability to use English flexibly and naturally in real-life situations. Teaching, assessment and academic progression are designed to work together to support students throughout their programme.

Teaching and Learning Methodology

Students are at the centre of our learning methods. Classes use interactive methodologies designed to maximise opportunities for language learning and practical use of English.

Lessons go beyond memorising rules and completing standard exercises. Students can expect a range of interactive activities, including pair and group work, discussions, language activities and opportunities to practise English in meaningful contexts.

Class Level and Placement

Before beginning their course, students complete a placement test and are placed in a class according to their result.

Students may need some time to settle into their class. Students who have questions or concerns about their class level should speak to their teacher or a member of the academic team.

Academic Progression

Academic progress is influenced by attendance, participation in class, study and the use of English outside the classroom.

Teachers assess whether students are ready to take the Level Progress Test based on a range of factors, including:

  • Weekly test results
  • Homework
  • Class participation
  • Language skills

Students are expected to consistently achieve scores of 80% or more in their tests before being considered for nomination to the Level Progress Test.

The Level Progress Test takes place every two weeks. Students must achieve a minimum score of 80% to progress to the next level.

Students who do not achieve the required score will receive guidance on the language skills they need to improve and may take the Level Progress Test again when recommended by their teacher.

Assessment

Regular assessment is an important part of DCU IA programmes. It enables students to monitor their progress and identify areas where additional practice may be required.

A variety of assessment methods may be used, including tests, projects and classroom activities, to provide an appropriate picture of students’ language abilities and learning needs.

Teachers regularly evaluate students’ learning and provide scores and feedback to help students understand their progress.

Syllabus

All DCU IA courses follow a syllabus.

For General English Programmes and Exam Preparation Courses, a textbook provides the main content of the syllabus. Teachers supplement this with additional materials and activities to provide variety and further practice.

The syllabus also incorporates aspects of Irish culture, as well as homework and assessment.

Certificates

Students receive a certificate at the end of their course.

Students who require an additional letter or report should contact DCU IA Reception in advance.
