Enhancing English Skills: An Interview with PHD Computer Science Candidate, Sebastião
August 23rd, 2024 english
Sebastião, a recent PhD candidate in Computer Engineering completed an intense one-month English course at DCU, which included two weeks of focused language study. During this time, he found the experience incredibly enriching. Sebastião, who is from Brazil, had the opportunity to connect with people from South Korea, Spain, and Italy which brought a unique perspective to the classes.
The course was structured so that students attended English classes in the morning and then participated in sessions at the DCU Business School in the afternoon. Notably, DCU Business School ranks among the top 1% of business schools worldwide.
Reflecting on his experience he said, “The experience was wonderful—because I am a computer engineer, my English is very technical, but this course helped me expand my language skills in new ways.”
Coming from a small city in Brazil, Sebastião enjoyed his experiences with peers and was surprised by the possibilities and opportunities he discovered at DCU. He spent time interacting with a Spanish student and appreciated the diversity of age groups in the class, believing it contributed to a well-rounded learning experience.
“Dublin is very beautiful. In my city, it’s all buildings and buildings, but Dublin has nature, architecture, and history—it’s wonderful”
This was Sebastião’s first time flying away from home, and he was impressed by the large, “cosmopolitan” campus at DCU. The experience of meeting colleagues and peers from different countries added to the rich, diverse environment.
Sebastião concluded with, “I would definitely enrol again if given the chance.”
