Academic Regulations and Academic Support

DCU International Academy (DCU IA) is committed to providing students with a supportive, inclusive and academically engaging learning environment. Students are expected to take an active role in their studies and to follow the academic regulations, policies and standards of behaviour of DCU International Academy and Dublin City University.

Academic Support and Student Experience

Students can expect DCU International Academy to:

  • Provide academic and personal support to help students work towards their language learning goals.
  • Provide an appropriate orientation programme to support students in settling into life in Ireland and studying at DCU.
  • Provide an international, diverse and academically engaging learning environment.
  • Make students aware of appropriate resources to help them develop independence in their learning.
  • Provide regular, constructive and timely feedback.
  • Provide opportunities for academic development and social interaction.
  • Offer opportunities to participate in social and cultural activities.
  • Encourage students to provide feedback on DCU IA services.
  • Treat students professionally and with appropriate regard for their needs and academic integrity.
  • Promote equality, inclusion and positive intercultural attitudes.

Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to:

  • Be courteous and respectful at all times.
  • Take responsibility for their learning and work towards becoming independent learners.
  • Contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Follow the professional advice of academic staff.
  • Attend all classes, be punctual and participate constructively in lessons.
  • Use English when communicating with staff and fellow students.
  • Complete assignments on time and with appropriate care and effort.
  • Seek support from the appropriate staff or services when required.
  • Regularly check email and DCU IA communication channels for important information.
  • Make themselves aware of and comply with the rules, regulations and policies of DCU IA and Dublin City University.
  • Respect the diversity of the staff and student community.
  • Use school facilities and materials responsibly and with consideration for others.

Attendance and Punctuality

Attendance at classes is compulsory and students are responsible for maintaining appropriate attendance.

Attendance is recorded by teachers during classes and DCU IA attendance records are updated regularly. Students who are absent are required to follow the appropriate absence reporting procedures and provide supporting documentation where required.

Punctuality is also an important part of students’ academic responsibilities. Students are expected to arrive on time and participate fully in their scheduled classes.

Classroom Conduct

Students are expected to behave respectfully and appropriately in the learning environment.

The use of mobile phones, mobile devices or computers for personal purposes is not permitted during class time. Aggressive, intolerant or discriminatory behaviour or language will not be tolerated.
